Generalized anxiety disorder is most commonly characterized by chronic anxiety, worry, and tension. Most people experience the symptoms of GAD during times of increased stress, but it is not uncommon for the symptoms to flare up even when under little to no stress. Although people suffering from G.A.D. are aware of the fact that their anxiety is out of proportion with the levels of stress that would be appropriate for their circumstances, there is little they can do to relieve the tension that builds within them.
Common Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Although it can be difficult to differentiate an anxiety attack (the result of panic disorder) and the symptoms of GAD, other conditions such as social anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, and even phobias can show similar symptoms to G.A.D. The distinguishing characteristic of GAD is that it does not have a specific symptom trigger. It can cause anxiety due to a wide range of activities, events, and thoughts.
In addition to anxiety and tension, general anxiety disorder can cause insomnia, irritability, and fatigue. Other symptoms of GAD include:
· Depression
· Difficulty concentrating
· Difficulty processing information
· Being easily frightened or startled
· Inability to remain calm or relax
· Inability to focus
· Restlessness
Physical Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Usually, the physical symptoms that manifest because of GAD are those that are characteristic of a response to stress or fear. They can include the following:
· Fatigue
· Lightheadedness
· Shortness of breath
· Rapid heartbeat
· Headache
· Hot flashes and/or sweating
· Muscle tension or aches
· Trembling or twitching
· Diarrhea
· Frequent urination
· Nausea
Because generalized anxiety disorder is known to worsen if left untreated, an early diagnosis and strategic treatment is crucial.
